Moped hunt = conditional success!

By waesa

Picked up this 2005 ZIP R4i for 400 bucks (compare to 1200 new). It runs, and it’s fun, but it’ll need a good tuneup and stuff before I trust it to solve the Transportation Conundrumâ„¢. Leaks some oil at transmission point and alternator. Electric start is screwy. 4 stroke 1 cylinder of roaring thunder. I’ve gotten it up to 20 mph.. know it’ll go better than that, but not in its current run down condition. Enough. Here’s the pics.

For those of you that haven’t met John, this is John. Knowing that he was going outover the interwebs I was able to get him to smile pretty.

And, I got a bonus pic of one of our geckos!

Not a great pic, but I had to paparazzi the poor little guy. Don’t be fooled. He’s about 1/4 the size of the pic. Love ‘em!

For new reader Carol, I’m planning on getting the ‘ped in to Quick Fix for the Works.. It’s ratty looking which suits me fine. But I want it running good in the very near future.

Gotta run. We have a BBQ to get ready. Housewarming sort of gig. Maybe I’ll get some pics and do an EXTRA edition tonight.

congrats on the moped. You gotta fix it up, man. Oh, yeah…you could totally make it cherry! I think it needs flames! Yeah….

….hey, it looks pretty good, fairly new, great price!! —how many miles on it? Again, a seat for a passenger—you sure it’s a 50cc?

But–20mph!!! You sure do need Someone’s help. After my Vino was derestricted I get 45mph —enough to make me a happy camper around town. (Commuted 15 miles to last job, a good ride on side streets. ;-)

Enjoy Da’ Bus til then (was Almost named that years ago).

  3. carol Says:

P.S. You should see da Vino at intersections.
It’s legal in CA to split lanes—so I do stoplight challenges….leave 4-wheelers in my dust!!
(Wouldn’t have dared that on pre-derestriction.)

It has 3k miles on it and I sincerely doubt it’s seen the inside of a shop in all that time. Definitely a slow boy. I really look forward to when I trust it for my commute. The thing’s fun, but if it can’t do its job it’s a waste.

Everyone calls it Da’ Bus anyway, so I wonder why they didn’t.. Bus is awesomein some respects (i.e. not having to pay attention to driving, lots of time to read etc.) but until I get better at it it’s adding hours to my workday. I’m not a real big fan of hours being added to my workday.

You’ve one Goood deal on that bike!! Got it from a brah, huh ? Worth a few bucks to get back its true speed—you no gotta Moped, tho–that Vento’s a 150cc—No ?

I lived Makiki, so lucky no far commute. Got my 1st one (Honda “Spree”) mainly for great & free Parking at downtown job. Sure paid for itself !

(aha….he learned his pidgin riding da’ bus) ;-)

  6. waesa Says:

My pidgin’s still pretty bad, yah? No dat’s a 49cc. Nada Vento neither. It’s a clone.
Yeah, the price was pretty good. I figure another 400 to fix er up and I’m golden for half-2/3 price or so.
That motorcycle looking moped I posted up in the other thread runs $2400! I could get a 250 cc enduro for that. Starting to see a lot of them though. I suppose 2400 + nothing is cheaper than 2400 + insurance, license, etc..

  7. carol Says:

boy that’s the most 150cc-ish 49cc I’ve ever seen— backseat & all. But then, my classic Vino’s a takeoff of a Vespa. They do copy good designs.

A few more paychecks & you’ll be riding it to work?
Anxious to know your best speed on it…..Keep us posted.
