Moped Hunt begins tomorrow.

By waesa

Yep. Gonna hit the dealers and see what they have (used and new) and any Craigslist type deals that pop up.. Hopefully I’ll be scootin’ around by tomorrow night. I’m in the market, so Oahu ‘ped owners that chance upon the site, drop a comment so I can put you on the list of places to visit!

A note to relocators, for whom this site was originally intended.. Banking. It can be a massive pain if you keep your mainland bank. I did (still am for now) and the 2.25 withdrawal charges are starting to grate on my nerves. Not to mention withdrawal limits which I didn’t have to deal with on the mainland and all sorts of stuff like that. Irritating. So irritating in fact that I might just open a local account. Since many of my bills autopay from my W*lls-F*rg* account I will likely keep that running and set up some sort of percentage deposited into each. Not sure what the best strategy long-term for that is.. If you know banking tricks, please comment as well.

Otherwise, things are unchanged. Another day in paradise and all that.

Here’s a pic of today’s plate lunch. Good deal since a plate lunch goes for about the cost of a can of soup! (two meal’s worth of plate lunch vs. two cans of soup at Star Markets)

Not a very good pic as I was shaking with hunger when I took it and it took all my resolve not to skip the pic and tear into it right away!

You’ve been there long enough for me to finally ask what I’ve been dying to know: have you had the good stuff yet? You know what I’m talking about, that incredible Hawaii-grown plant that is so darn expensive here on the mainland. And by the time it gets here, it’s only at 10% potency because it’s ‘blended’ with other stuff.

That’s right…I’m talking KONA. Have you had any yet?

Is there anything from here that you can’t get there? I would send the occasional care package if I had a list and an address.

I thought I sent you my address. I’ll text it to you.
Wisconsin cheese curds (specifically Ellsworth WI cheese curds) are on the list..
I have had the good stuff. It is good stuff. We cans tart up a cheese curd for coffee exchange.. I’d be ok with that.
Outside of snow and icefishing gear I can’t think of anything we can’t get here.. but dairy is brutally expensive.
And since you asked about bugs a while back and I dont remember if I answered, I’ve barely seen any, but I saw a black bee that was the size of the end of my thumb yesterday. So no, not real buggy.

…am a SoCal mainlander now–drove mopeds in Honolulu from ‘85 to ‘02 and miss The Best scooter servicing from Frank at “Quik-Fix”–wish I could import his mechanics…look him up after you get your moped. Btw, I had 2 ripped off there–get a good kryptomite-type cable, and USE IT!!

Hey–wa happen’ to da 2-scoop rice in yo plate lunch??

    uh….Mike–the locals call it ‘pakalolo’.

  4. carol Says:

P.S. To find a good 1st moped there, I’d get one of the rebuilt ones from “Quick-Fix”….OR, if you want a new one–ask Frank to recommend a good dealer there.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I just put his location info in my phone so I can check him out. I’m looking for used, but you never know.. And it’s great to know where the service place is. I’m going to be using it Ewa to Dillingham daily.. That’s a lot of miles on a little machine, so I’ll be needing service from time to time.

How picky are they about inspections, etc? Like if I was to put a bore kit in there or something would anyone care? Do they even require inspections? I’ll ask Frank, too.. Should I tell him you said Hi?

Oh yeah. No make fun. Im no kama’aina, just a hungry haole. Thought it’d be moa betta wit noodles den 2 scoop rice. Maybe, maybe not. Still, dam ono grinds, braddah!

Quick-Fix always went one step BEYOND in their servicing for me. Once, surprised me by replacing yammy front panel, no charge, after my moped was recovered from a hot-wiring attempt. And, they’ve an equipped van which picked up stranded me with flats more than a coupla times! (Here I have to pay a tow truck) Btw–That’s a long ride from Ewa, you might want to get over a 50cc (but then, it’s not a Moped).

It’s illegal in HI to de-restrict a 50cc and still call it a Moped. No moped “Inspections” tho. Don’t know if Frank would do something like that. Had to pass Motorcycle test here (in CA) at 69, use helmet, get insurance, license, in order to drive my 50cc yammy “Vino”–so I had it de-restricted as long as it’s a considered a legal motorcycle!! Lucky you live Hawaii.

Yeh!! Tell him I miss his good work! He might remember me–being the oldest female mopeder there. Haven’t yet been hit here, either. I had a red Yamaha “Razz” then. Tell him I miss him & his crew, and to open a branch in San Diego for me. ;-)

P.S. Keep in mind, I left HI seven years ago–there might have been some changes…..both in moped laws & Quick-Fix since then.
